Joey King is having a very big weekend. Her new film, Independence Day: Resurgence, is out, and she’s starring in our very first original shoot for Obsessee. Shot by our photographer Paley Fairman, this is Joey like you’ve never seen her before, and all day long, we’ll be revealing the mesmerizing shoot right here on Instagram. And as you enter the actress’s dreamy world, you’ll get to know her too! Resurgence isn’t her first time on the silver screen, though; you may remember her wearing a hot-pink wig in Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here or playing Emma Stone’s little sister in Crazy, Stupid, Love. At 16, Joey’s already made a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s smartest and most talented young actresses, and she’s ready to make some major waves. — @maddie.sensibile
OBSESSEE: As a young woman in the entertainment world, what do you see as the biggest challenge facing females in the industry?
@joeykingactress: As a younger female, not only am I a female, but I am still considered, in some people’s eyes, a child. It’s hard to get respect sometimes from people. I’ve always found that the people I’ve worked with so far have been so respectful and amazing. I’ve yet to encounter too many people who aren’t supportive of me. There’s been sometimes where I’m like, this is because I’m a woman and I’m younger than 30 years old.
OBSESSEE: What’s one thing you always say to yourself for motivation?
@joeykingactress: My sisters and my mom are just so supportive of me. I’m self-deprecating, but in a fun way. For motivation, I always say if I feel confident in the work that I’m doing or I feel like it feels natural, there’s no way it can’t be coming off right.
OBSESSEE: What’s one thing nobody knows about you?
@joeykingactress: I will tell you that I am a *dank* yo-yoer. It’s so random—like, why?
OBSESSEE: Tell us about what you’ve seen as your biggest achievement in your career so far.
@joeykingactress: Being able to watch a performance of mine and say hey, I think I did a good job. It’s really hard for an actor to do, or at least I speak for myself when I say I’m very self-critical. It’s more of an achievement in my mind than a physical achievement. It’s a pretty big deal for me.
OBSESSEE: The original Independence Day was released before you were born, so what was it like preparing for and being a part of the new installment of the film?
@joeykingactress: I’ve also seen it like 80 times. I’m a huge fan of the original film. This was the third time Roland [Emmerich] had asked me to work with him. I’d worked with him twice before, and it was the most amazing experience in the world. To have a director that you admire and love so much want you to come along and be part of such a big moment in cinema history, it is so exciting for me. I cannot wait for people’s reactions toward this film. It’s going to absolutely incredible.
OBSESSEE: In the spirit of your new film, what’s your ultimate “independence day”?
@joeykingactress: Whenever I’m sad, I like to spend the day by myself, which sounds stupid because you’re like, don’t you want to be around people? I don’t like to talk about my feelings! Whenever I’m sad, I’m like, I’m leaving, I’m going to get a pedicure and frozen yogurt by myself, and I will be back. And my mom and sisters are like, do you want anyone to go with you? I am like, no, I do not; I will see you guys later. One of my favorite “me” times is when I’m on an airplane: most of the time, six or more uninterrupted hours just sitting with myself, no phone, no nothing. I can have all the thoughts I need, get some work done—it’s great.
OBSESSEE: What was the most difficult part about essentially growing up on film and TV sets?
@joeykingactress: I think the hardest part is when I went through my painfully awkward phase. It’s been documented on film and TV shows.
OBSESSEE: Who or what is on your radar right now?
@joeykingactress: I have to say I’m a huge fan of Kiersey Clemons. She’s so beautiful, and she is hilarious. I first saw her in Dope. I can’t wait to see what she has coming. My sister Hunter King. She is killin’ it right now! She just got a series-regular spot on this show Life in Pieces on CBS. She’s working so hard; she’s won two Emmys. I’m so proud of her, and I think she’s going to have a really, really big year.
